Murray State University

A four-year public university with about 11,166 students is Murray state university which is located in in the city of Murray, Kentucky.Murray State University has been recognized by "U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges" for 24  straight years as one of the top regional universities in the United States. Among the top-ranked public regional universities in Kentucky Murray state university is one of it.Murray State University operates extended campuses offering upper level and graduate courses in addition to the main campus in Paducah ,Hopkinsville ,Madisonville and Henderson. The passage of Senate Bill 14 by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of
Kentucky is the  history of Murray State University can be traced which created two normal schools to address the growing demand for professional teachers. In the western part of the state, which caused many cities and towns to bid for the new normal school.

Murray was chosen as the site of the western normal school on September 2 1922 while More-head was chosen for the eastern normal school. The first president of the Murray State Normal School by the State Board of Education was John Wesley Carr on November 26, 1922. The Normal School Commission picked Rainy Wells to be the first president believing it had the authority to elect the president. The Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled for the State Board of Education, and Carr would become Murray's first president on may 15 1923. On September 23, 1923 Murray state normal school was opened.On the first floor of Murray high school the classes were held. In 1925 all students commuted until the first dormitory, Wells Hall, was constructed .Under Carr's presidency  Wilson Hall was also completed with other structures were in progress. Rainy T. Wells, recognized as the founder of Murray State in 1926 and became its second president. From 1926 to 1932 it served well and  during this time Lovett Auditorium, Carr Health Building and Rogue library were all completed.
The Normal School was renamed Murray State Normal School and Teachers College in 1926 and the General Assembly granted it authority to confer baccalaureate degrees.

The college was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1928.The name was changed to Murray State Teachers College in 1930 and it was granted authority to offer liberal arts and pre-professional courses.In 1948 again the named was changed to Murray state university and the General Assembly authorized the Board of Regents to change the name to Murray State University in 1966.
